Is Goa going in right direction? We should salute the patience of Goans. We are tolerating almost everything. Are we monitoring the progress of the government we have elected? Most of the decisions taken by the government are opposed by people, andolans, dharnas are a common sight in Panaji indicating that the government is not sensitive towards peoples aspirations. Be it Regional plan or computer teachers agitation or now the National highway alignment agitations: Goa has never witnesses this earlier. Once, the beautiful tiny state of Goa is getting converted to a concrete jungle. Foreigners are buying land at their whims and fancies. The regional plan is not getting notified for almost 9 years. The mega housing projects are under scanner, Goan economy is heavily dependent on mining and tourism. Industries need to be given a boost. There have to be job opportunities for youths in Goa to prevent youth from migrating out of Goa in search of jobs. Why do we see so less industrial investment. Goans needs development but not at the cost of damaging environment. There has to be stress on creating basic infrastructure. Many parts in state need to be connected by bridges. People need electricity, water and roads. Is Goa self sufficient on power? Is there a plan to generate electricity in Goa? Goa has ample of natural water; we can use it to generate electricity. In future electricity demand is going to increase and we need to plan now. We do not have 24 X 7 water supply. Given the increase in population and tourist influx, water can be scarcity in near future. There has to be more stress on rain water harvesting. The roads in Goa need to be widened. The backlog of things we need to achieve is endless.

The reason behind this sorry state is rooted in the vicious cycle of corruption which starts at elections. Several voters see only short term gains and vote for candidates who distribute motorcycles, liquor and money. What they don't realize is that for money to flow OUT, money has to flow IN. Lot of money is shelled out for elections. Goa being small state and number of voters per constituency are less it is easier to lure voters. Votes are bought by paying sum of rupees one hundred onwards. Liquor and chicken are free flowing during elections. There are many interesting stories of motorbikes, TV sets, sarees, free rice, shirdi trips being bestowed on upon voters during elections. There are many rumors that in some constituencies cost of elections runs to cores of rupees. But all Goans pay a very heavy price for this one month of royal treatment to a few misguided voters, because once elections are over the cycle of recovering money from common man starts.

Please see with open eyes around us, how the money recovery process is on. Dubious land deals, land sold at throwaway prices to builders, uncontrolled mining activities, commissions from industrial houses, nexus between police, politicians and drug mafia, contracts awarded to bad contractors. The effect is visible with bad roads in the state, water pipelines getting busted, health hazards in mining areas. Look at the quality of civil work. The quality of material supplied to government is pathetic, right from electrical equipments, medical equipments to office stationery and chairs. What is the rate to get government job? I guess most of the people trying for govt jobs know this. Whenever we go to government office we are often asked to come tomorrow. The clerk often asks us to produce some document which was never mentioned before. The situation is created such that the work cannot be done without paying. Dear Goans this is our own money! We pay taxes in different forms like income tax, sales tax/VAT, house tax, municipal/ panchayat tax etc. All the money goes to government treasury and is supposed to be used for developments activities and welfare schemes for the people of Goa.

A study has revealed that Goa's levels of corruption are alarming. Time has come to think wise and vote wisely. Our religions have always taught us not to steal. People who vote based on money, encourage corruption. They do not realize that they are stealing from the people of Goa through the politicians. Let us break this viscious cycle by voting for people who can achieve fast progress for Goa by eliminating corruption at all levels.
